PROPAGANDA DEFINED

Joe Bakewell.

PROPAGANDA DEFINED.

1.   PROPAGANDA DEFINITION: information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.

For years, we’ve had a constant campaign going on. It has been the preferred, almost exclusive, activity for our elected politicians and media. I’ve written many times about the forces behind this phenomenon—to no effect. This piece is not about that.

With the midterm elections coming up, we’re experiencing a buildup of activity bordering on desperation. It may be helpful to be aware of the techniques being employed.

Most people of my acquaintance seem to believe that propaganda is untrue and that facts are synonymous with the truth.

Propaganda can be untrue, or true and can sometimes be employed in a worthy cause; such as persuading children to avoid smoking.  And, by selecting and assembling the right facts, a skilled propagandist can put across a whopper lie. This technique is so powerful that untrue propaganda often starts with a recitation of facts; thereby comforting those who want to believe the lie.

This piece will not change your mind about anything, but a little introspection never hurts. And it may help you to understand why some of your acquaintances can be so wrongheaded and forceful at the same time.
