THOSE WHO DON’T LEARN FROM HISTORY, ETC., ETC.
In our current polarized state, it’s not surprising to see
lots of analyses detailing our situation. Most of these are clearly biased from
either the Right. Or the Left. Some are detailed, containing a good deal of
verifiable truth selected to support an attack on the other party. A
collection of these amounts to a propaganda war contributing little, if
anything, to an improvement in our government, our country, or our society.
What’s needed is an in depth, unbiased, assessment of how
humans have reacted in the past to similar problems. This is the sort of thing
that we would have expected to come from Academia. Are there any campuses left
where the freedom of thought required for such a task is still
encouraged?
Meanwhile, I’ve been trying to dope it out for myself.
Normally, I’d ‘follow the money’ believing that serious full-time investors
spend considerable time and money assessing the course of our economy. They do a
pretty good job of avoiding wishful thinking. But this essay is not about
investing it’s about our country.
In the past, I’ve advocated reading the financial press
because it focuses on results and not on politics per se. Nowadays, I think the
opposite may be true; another indication of political chaos.
Note that interest rates are very low. There’s more pressure
to lend money than to borrow it. What do you make of that? A shortage of
worthwhile investments?
Ah, what to do? Nothing, tune out. Don’t listen, read, or
watch anything coming out of the mouth of a politician. Wait until after the
election and then decide what’s best for you.
Joe Bakewell.
