CORTLAND AND VICINITY.
The
Water-Witch Engine Co.'s ball last Friday evening was well attended, and passed
off in the pleasantest manner possible.
The
Homer Cornet Band will accompany Lewis Hose Company of Oneonta to this city on
firemen's parade day, October 11th.—Bing. Rep.
The New Home Sewing Machine was awarded the
first premium at the Marathon Fair, with the White and Singer in competition.
Mr.
H. M. Kellogg has been very successful in raising plums from trees set out and
cultivated by himself. They are equal in flavor and quality to any we ever ate.
Miss
Sally Bonney has our thanks for a basket of fine plums, pears and other fruit
raised by herself. They were on exhibition at the Fair, and held their own with
the best.
The
number of pupils in attendance at the Normal school is 567, divided as follows:
Normals, 270; Academics, 27; Intermediates, 142; Primaries, 128. The number of
new Normals is 82.
A
call for a meeting of prohibition voters is issued for next Monday evening at
the Y. M. C. A. rooms. It is headed "To Prohibition Voters," and it is
hoped that the meeting will be largely attended.
At
the County Fair Mr. Mahan took first premium on everything he exhibited— on the
White sewing machine and the work done on it, on pianos and organs, and on best
display of musical instruments—seven in all. Which is glory enough for one Fair,
we should say.
Our
readers should bear in mind the grand excursion to Niagara Falls next week
Thursday, the 27th inst. Train leaves Cortland at 5:15 A. M., arrives there at
noon, and gives seven hours at the Falls. Fare only $5.25 for round trip, which
includes all necessary expenses, as provisions can be taken along and
conveniences will be provided at the [Prospect] Park.
Among
the certificates of incorporation recently filed at Albany is the following:
The Crandall Type Writer Company, formed to manufacture and sell type writers
and other mechanical appliances to supersede the pen. Capital stock, 125,000,
divided into 250 shares. Operations to be carried on in Syracuse.
Incorporators, John H. Reed, of New York; Dexter H. Marsh, of Groton ; W. Niles
Smith, of Clayton, and Lucien S. Crandall, of Cortland.
On
passing Sager & Jennings' drug store our attention was called to three crystaline
forms in their window. The central one represents a temple formed of deep blue
crystals of sulphate of copper, on either side of which are two columns of
alum. These beautiful specimens are from the laboratory of Powers & Weightman,
of Philadelphia, They are the finest ever exhibited in Central New York, and
were designed for our County Fair, but did not arrive until Friday, when they
were placed on exhibition and attracted much attention.
Judge
Duell at Delhi last week obtained of judge Follett at Special Term an order
confirming the report of the commissioners in the matter of the street railway
crossing of the railroad tracks. A motion made by the S. & B. Railroad
Company to re-open the case for the purpose of introducing testimony to show
the value of their land and the damage to them at the crossing, was at the same
time dismissed by Judge Follett with costs. The railroad company have twenty
days from the confirmation of the report in which to appeal therefrom.
