Board of Supervisors.
EIGHTEENTH DAYDEC. 1.
   Consideration of the Hatch highway tax, after being called up, the committee were given further time to examine.
   County resolution, chapter 197 of the laws of 1864, as amended by chapter 288 of the laws of 1878, were extended and made applicable to this county.
   The County Clerk was authorized to procure the missing maps of Cortland streets, and the Clerk of the Board was directed to draw an order for payment of the same.
   The town of Willett showed by preamble that orders to the amount of $175.50 for damage to sheep to Nov. 8, 1883, had been given by the auditors upon Supervisor Greene; that $4 5.90 of dog funds was in the hands of the Supervisor on said date, and the dog tax of said town, after deducting the fees for collecting it, was $48.80; that out of said dog fund $151.81 had been paid in the last three years for repairs on road and bridges; and asked that in pursuance of chapter 197 of the laws of 1864, as amended by chapter 288 of the laws of 1878, the supervisor be authorized to add $82.80 to the abstract for the purpose of paying said orders, and the petition was granted.
NINETEENTH DAY—DEC. 3.
   Mr. Carley, special committee to whom was referred the matter of the Franklin Hatch highway tax, reported that Mr. Hatch was legally assessed 16 1/2 days; that overseer Arnold legally warned him to appear and work the same at a specified time and place; that Mr. Hatch failed to appear and work, and refused to perform any labor in compliance with said notice; that the overseer made return of said unworked road tax, in compliance with the law, to supervisor R. B. Smith; that the supervisors are required by law to cause the amount of such arrearages to be levied upon and collected from the real and personal estate of the person so assessed, estimating at the rate of $1.50 per day; and that he recommended that the sum of $24.65 be added to the assessment roll of Cortlandville, to be levied upon and collected from the real and personal estate of Franklin Hatch. The report and recommendations were adopted.
TWENTIETH DAY—DEC. 3.
   The report of the committee on equalization shows the total valuation of real estate in the county to be $8,136,071, of personal property $1,040,039.80. The committee on equalization was instructed to apportion State and county taxes and school commissioners' expenses among the towns.
   The bill of E. F. Hitchcock, of $4, as poll clerk, was audited, and R. B. Smith was directed to add the same to the abstract of Cortlandville.
   The Cortland Democrat and Standard were designated to publish the terms of the Supreme and County Courts for the ensuing year.
   The Cortland NEWS and Democrat were designated to publish the election notices for 1884, at a compensation of $32.40.
   The County Court stenographer's compensation was placed at $5 per day, and make no charge for travel.
   The clerk was authorized to have printed suitable election notices for 1884 and distribute them among the election districts.
   Bill number 85 was allowed at $30, and number 78 at $20.
   It was ordered that there be levied and collected upon the taxable property the several items hereinafter mentioned, and the clerk was directed to draw all necessary orders for the payment of the same:

   Report was adopted.
   The clerk was instructed to draw an order of $260 in favor of District-Attorney Palmer to defray expenses of the arrest of James H. Fox.
   The committee on equalization made a report of the distribution of State and county taxes and school commissioners' expenses, of which the following are the totals for the county:
   State tax for schools, $10,136.80
                    general purposes, 20,395.32
   County tax , 34,270.98
   School Commissioners expenses, 400.00
   The report was adopted, and the several amounts mentioned levied and assessed upon the several towns as reported.
TWENTY-FIRST DAY—DEC. 5.
   The day's session was taken up with the passage of bills and miscellaneous business, and the Board adjourned until Wednesday, Dec. 12.

   KENFIELD—CHAPIN.—At the residence of the bride's parents, Dec. 5,1883, by Rev. D. B. Grant, Mr. George D. Kenfield to Miss Myrtie V. Chapin, all of McGrawville.

DIED.
   CULVER.—In Cuyler, N. Y., Nov. 26, 1883, Reuben Culver, aged 30 years.
   WHITNEY.—In Cortland, N. Y., Dec. 7, 1883, at the residence of her son-in-law, Joseph P. Price, Mrs. Lydia Gates, wife of the late James F. Whitney, in the 85th year of her age.
   CARPENTER.--In Homer, on Monday, Dec. 10, 1883, Mrs. William Carpenter, aged 49 years.
   NILES.—At South Cortland, Wednesday, Dec. 5, 1883, John Niles, in the 86th year of his age.
