A THEORY OF EVERYTHING.
As I attempt to absorb the changes associated with our not yet settled election, I look around and wonder how we, as a nation, can possibly afford what we’re doing, much less what’s being planned, I assume the political infighting will continue, as will the horrendous government spending.
We’ll get a boost from a vaccine reducing COV 19 to an easily managed low level. But the budgetary and economic improvements gained thereby seem small compared to the spending and programs ahead. Will we overwhelm an improving economy with taxation, regulation, and a touch of socialism?
But there’s hope. We have achieved remarkable improvements in productivity. We grow more food, build better houses, manufacture much better automobiles with far less labor, materials, and energy than just a few years ago.
We’ve also eliminated whole categories of work, toll takers, telephone operators.
In short, we’re getting everything we need for a fraction of the earlier costs in labor, materials, and energy. Therein lies an enormous opportunity to reapportion our nation’s efforts. I’m thinking climate change, inequality, education. Maybe even a shorter work-week.
