CORTLAND ENLARGED SCHOOL DISTRICT 2023-24 PROPOSED BUDGET WAS DEFEATED

In light of the recent school budget defeat, a few suggestions come to mind. Let’s start with a declaration of revenue, which is missing on the simple flyers that are mailed to taxpayers in the district. Expenses are listed in three categories but projected revenues are missing. Revenues would fit on one line.

Are the known earmarked grants by state legislators included in this budget? If not, why not?

Underestimating revenue is a classic budget tactic. We were unable to find a published itemized revenue breakdown in budget presentations at the (online) school business office.

Have taxpayers and school district employees done all the homework necessary to validate the contingency budget? If not, why not?

Expenses appear in the flyer as administrative, program and capital components. Further details are found in the school district website which occasion more questions than answers. Lack of revenue details, ditto.

We want our schools to be properly funded but we expect more clarity and detail. Verifiable replies to this post will be published as received.
