I was born on August 5, 1850, near Dieppe, in the castle of Miromesnil, France. I was a Norman. My mother divorced when I was eleven, and my younger brother and I grew up in Etretat. My mother was learned in classical literature. She taught me Shakespeare, and she sent me to a monastery school in Yvetot. When I was thirteen, she sent me to study classical literature at the Lycee Pierre-Corneille in Rouen.
I was fond of outdoor life, open fields, the sky, hills and streams. I especially liked the sea. In October 1868, I rescued the poet Algemon Charles Swinburne who almost drowned off the coast of Etretat at Normandy.
The Franco-Prussian war began in 1870 after I graduated from college. I enlisted as a volunteer. When the war ended in 1871, I went to Paris and worked several years as a clerk in the Navy Department. Next, I took a job at the Department of Public Instruction. It was during the nine years of my employment in Paris that I met my mentor, Gustave Flaubert. I worked hard and contributed stories to Le Figaro, l'Echo de Paris, Gil Blas, and Le Gaulois. Many of these stories were about the war.
In 1880, I published a short story called Boule de Suif or Tallow Ball. It was a success, and it established me as a rising literary star. In 1881, I published a collection of short stories called Le Maison Tellier. I wrote and published my first novel in 1883, Une Vie, A Woman's Life. In following years, I published two more novels, Bel Ami and Pierre et Jean. I was a financial success as well.
In my spare time I would canoe on the Seine between Chatou and Port-Marly. I traded jokes with the fishermen, and chatted with sailors. I chased dragon flies and they chased me. I had enough money from my work as a writer to buy a private yacht, which I called Bel-Ami, and I sailed off the coast of Cannes and other places. In my lifetime, I travelled to England, Italy, Algeria, Sicily and visited most of the regions of France.
I contracted syphilis when I was a young man during the war, and it had a profound effect on my physical and mental health as I grew older. On January 2, 1892, I cut my throat and tried to commit suicide. I was committed to a private asylum at Passy, in Paris, and I died on July 6, 1893. I was 43 years old.
"I entered literary life as a meteor, and I shall leave it like a thunderbolt." These words I spoke to my friend, Jose Maria de Heredia, before my death.

Students, SUCC Professor Form Antichrist Society
Several students and a maverick SUCC professor recently established an Antichrist society on campus. They met at Corey Union and declared the purpose of the group was to promulgate unchristian thoughts and activities on campus. The name of the group is Disciples of Antichrist, or DAC.
"Christ is a myth. Christ never existed. The New Testament is a lie," stated maverick Professor of Education Anthony Weiner. "Stop the celebration of Christmas. Call a Christmas tree a holiday tree. Listen to the philosophical statements of professional wrestler Jeff "Antichrist" Hardy, and prophetic songs by Sex Pistols lead singer Johnny Rotten. Read evolutionary biologist J.B.S. Haldane."
As one might expect, Professor Weiner has received death threats. It was rumored that the Knights of Columbus threatened to set fire to his house. Earlier this year, his house was stoned by male student zombies who accused him of philandering with female student zombies. These are the same male and female student zombies who hang out at the Blue Frog Coffee Cafe in downtown Cortland.

Attempts to publish DAC "thoughts and principles" in the student newspaper were unsuccessful. So DAC posted leaflets and notices throughout campus. Catholic, Mormon and born-again fundamentalist Christian students were outraged. Initially, Muslims were noncommittal. When they found out that DAC had written disparaging comments about the Prophet and took sides with Salman Rushdie, they joined the Christians. They sought to ban the group's activities or shut them down. Some righteous, prayerful and God-fearing Christian students threatened personal violence against DAC students. The college president and trustees were reviewing the rules governing hate groups, and a spokesman for the college said an announcement would be forthcoming.
Anticipating violence on campus, campus police have increased patrols and notified the state police. "We believe reason will prevail, but we are taking precautionary measures nonetheless," said campus police Lt. Herman Cain. "Reason, in police language, is mace."

Mayor Feiszli Explains Termination Of Former Corporation Counsel Walsh

Dear Constituents:
This letter is in response to Mr. Walsh. If, as an attorney, he is going to accuse me of being ‘ineffective and impulsive”, he should support his comments and accusations with facts.
Mr. Walsh claims that I failed to follow through on projects. I am very interested in knowing exactly what those projects are. As an attorney, he should know better to make such claims without supporting documentation. Again, with “mis or non management”, I am interested to hear what documentation he has to support his opinion of mismanagement. Mr. Walsh - please reply at your earliest convenience as I look forward to your response.
I thank Mr. Aldrich for publicly supporting me along with many others in the community. It appears that Mr. Aldrich’s support for me ruffled former Mayor Walsh’s feathers. Mr. Aldrich, and many residents in our community who know me, understand that I would NEVER turn my back on any residents of the city. I take great offense that Mr. Walsh would imply that I am ineffectual. As your mayor, I treat EVERYONE equally and have always believed that working together is the best way to solve ANY issue we face as a city, and so far it has been a successful approach.
Since Mr. Walsh has made accusations about me, I feel that I have no choice but to make a few observations about Mr. Walsh during his time as corporation counsel for the city. At this time, I am only going to discuss the rental permit law as this has been a highly controversial subject. Unlike Mr.Walsh, I have documented everything that I state below.
When the rental permit law came to the common council for adoption, I had honest
concerns with the law as written. I voted for the law with the understanding that those
problems would be amended after adoption. This never happened and now the city is
being sued for the exact issues that I was concerned about.

When the city received threats from landlords to sue the city over the housing
ordinance, I asked former Corporation Counsel Ron Walsh to draft a letter to the city
council asking them to consider working with the landlords to solve the housing
problems. I believe that Mr. Tobin was the only alderman who responded saying that we
should challenge the landlords. One week later the city received notice of the lawsuit.

of the Supreme Court, I was embarrassed and disappointed by what appeared to be a

When current Corporation Counsel Patrick Perfetti was unanimously confirmed by
Common Council, he was adamant that he would fight and defend the lawsuit. These
past few months, Mr. Perfetti has worked in concert with Meira Hertzburg and so far,
the city has been successful. This administration will continue to work for the best
interest of the City of Cortland and make the necessary modifications to the rental
permit program so that it is an enforceable law.

provided before the Common Council meeting on Tuesday, May 4th;
1) We would like justification as to why an employee works 16 hours on both Saturday and Sunday, and gets the rest of the week off. Supposedly the Waste Water Treatment Plant is automated and can call people when there is a problem at the plant. When was this approved and by whom?
2) We need an explanation as to why your department has so much overtime. Almost $20k so far, and at the Department head meeting you stated it would surpass the $50k budgeted.
3) We need justification for the 4 positions that you have requested, not a letter from state showing what employment levels are at other sites are. They clearly left out Ithaca and Oneonta; my feeling has been that the City of Cortland does the hiring for positions within the City, not the
state.

As an F.Y.I., I received a call from DEC this afternoon. They wanted to give me an advanced notice that they have completed an inspection of the WWTP and gave the City a marginal rating. DEC also asked the City to do an evaluation of their staffing level.
DEC is sending a letter along with a link to a site that will help determine what the staffing level should be given the size of our City, type of Treatment Plant, etc.. They had recommended that someone such as Barton and Loguidice P.C. prepare this since they are currently under contract with the City.

Did we get an answer why one person was working so much overtime and on what?
I would like to see the exact tasks this person was performing not someone recollection
A point that should be made is how can we hire anyone if we don't know what we are looking for?
Also I would like to propose that the final decision on all new hires in the City be determined by the Common Council.
This will eliminate any nepotism or cronism that has taken place in the hiring process.
In regards to the Police position I asked for overtime by day of the week and I would like a duty roster.
By duty roster it should show who is working what shift what day of the week.

Ouch, all my business is referals, no advertising, 18 years of satisfied customers and only a small handfull of code officers that make things more difficult than they need to be. I've had customers refuse permits because they don't want certain code officers in their house. They trust me.

Ouch, all my business is referals, no advertising, 18 years of satisfied customers and only a small handfull of code officers that make things more difficult than they need to be. I've had customers refuse permits because they don't want certain code officers in their house. They trust me.

Thanks to Brian for the hard copy first of all. I would like to look into the armory. Does anyone know where former corp. council Knickerbochers office was located? It is my understanding that Ron getting an office @ city hall resulted in Rob Avery moving to the armory. Are we heating and cooling that office space for one person?
Parking tickets; I was at city hall for a permit for my garage on Tuesday. While there I was informed by Connie that I had two outstanding tickets from 1994, yes 16 years ago. I paid 40 bucks for two 20 dollar tickets. That being said, how many old tickets are out there and how much does that amount to. I find it hard to believe that I had not paid the tickets but am I going to dig up proof from 16 years ago? Not worth the time. Would I ever have been informed about the tickets if not having been an alderman, doubt it. Would I have paid? NO! Shouldn,t 116 year old tickets have a little interest added on?
Item 10; Stephanie is going to send me some policies to proofread when I have time
Item 7; I just joined the committee last Thursday
Item 2; sorry Brian but Bubba Craig and I are sort of working the other side of the fence right now
I would like to make item 20 the armory and welcome any knowledge that you all may have.
