TRUTH

Joe Bakewell.
TRUTH.

Many people tend to conflate ‘truth’ with ‘fact’. So that saying that the earth is round is accepted as a true statement. But, if we move to the subject of religion, we can see that the one true God is not the same for all believers. In historical terms, it’s not that long ago that Christians were burning other Christians at the stake for heresy. Many crowded around to enjoy the spectacle.

In most countries today, we don’t execute people for errant religious beliefs. But, how do we feel, in our beloved country, about people whose version of what’s true differs from our own? We’ve always had biases and prejudices, but I can’t recall a time of greater polarity and contempt for those who hold opposing views. At the risk of joining the contemptible, I argue that Trump is not the driving force behind this phenomena; as we will likely see after November.

So, if removing Trump doesn’t do the job, will we just live with the situation? Or try something else?

I’m a slow learner. On the issue of special interests money corrupting our government, I’ve failed. Very few, if any, see this problem as a blocking, showstopper, between us and our democracy.  With this in mind, I offer only the following with regard to ‘truth’: If you’re going to solve a problem, fix a situation, you better thoroughly understand how things got that way in the first place.

Joe Bakewell.
