LIGHTON-FITZGERALD.
The Social Event of the Season—Magnificent Wedding Presents.
The social topic of conversation reached its zenith last evening at 6 o'clock, when the Rev. John J. McLochlin of St. Mary's of the Vale Church, pronounced the simple service of the Catholic creed which united in the holy bonds of matrimony Mr. C Frank Lighton, of Syracuse, N. Y., and Miss Catherine Helena Fitzgerald, of Cortland. The bride was attired in an elegant costume of white faille francaise, trimmed with Dutchess lace, carrying in her hand a bouquet of white bridal roses. The groom was dressed in the regulation suit of black.
Miss Cora Belle Fitzgerald, sister of the bride, occupied the lady's position of honor and Mr. J. Edward Lighton, brother of the groom, performed the duties of best man.
Mr. Henry Dalzell Dwight and Mr. J. Ward Neal of Syracuse, Mr. William H. Fitzgerald of Chicago, Ill., and Mr. Art R. Peck of Cortland, most gallantly attended the bridal party and the large assembly present at the formal reception following the ceremony.
The marriage ceremony was witnessed only by the immediate families of the bride and groom; following which between four and five hundred invited guests availed themselves of the opportunity presented to congratulate the newly wedded pair, who received the guests standing in a most handsome alcove of palms, ferns and potted plants erected in the tower corner of the northwest parlor at the magnificent residence of Hon. and Mrs. Lawrence J. Fitzgerald, 39 Tompkins street. A covered arch erected from the broad piazza to the curb formed a most pleasing entrance as the guests alighting from their carriages were ushered into the dazzling reception chamber—the broad halls and adjoining rooms, even to the spacious porches forming, figuratively speaking, one vast room through which wafted soft, enlivening strains from the noted Dickinson & Beman orchestra of Binghamton, to the grandeur of which the genial, unassuming warmth of welcome and entertaining manner of Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald and family crowned the social event, one long to be retained in memory.
During the entire week preceding, tokens of esteem and remembrance had been coming in by express, mail and private messenger, until a most valued and varied assortment was displayed by the happy couple who prized them from true friendship for the donors. The value collectively will amount to from $7,000 to $8,000. Sterling silver, rare plate, bric-a-brac, pictures, etchings, jewels, furnishings, etc. all displaying refined taste in selection.
The bride is the eldest daughter of ex-State Treasurer Fitzgerald, and the groom is a son of Hon. John Lighton of Syracuse and himself co-partner of the widely-known firm of Hier & Lighton of the same city. The social acquaintance of the contracting parties is exceedingly wide-spread and their personal popularity is almost unbounded. Many letters were received from prominent people who were unable to attend the social occasion. Many prominent guests were present from out of town.
Mr. W. C. Teal of Rochester, whose reputation as a caterer is second to none in the State, had charge of the wedding supper, which he furnished. It is sufficient to say that the feast prepared on this occasion proved that he had earned the reputation he enjoys. Beside himself, there were fourteen trained assistants, and all present were amply and handsomely served with every delicacy of the season.
Mr. and Mrs. Lighton will visit noted summer resorts during the following weeks, accompanied by the well wishes of friends near and far for health, happiness and prosperity, in all of which the DEMOCRAT most heartily joins.
